Aircel Maxis Deal: Delhi Court Grants Regular Bail To Chidambaram And Son Karti

The court accepted the bail bonds of Rs one lakh each in both the cases and granted regular bail to the duo.

New Delhi: A Delhi Court on Wednesday granted regular bail to former union minister P. Chidambaram and his son Karti in cases filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in relation to the Aircel Maxis deal.

The court accepted the bail bonds of Rs one lakh each in both the cases and granted regular bail to the duo.

The accused had moved the application through their lawyer Arshdeep Singh, seeking relief after they appeared before the court in pursuance of summons issued against them after it took cognizance of the chargesheets filed by the probe agencies in the matter, PTI reported.

The court had earlier granted anticipatory bail to the two accused in the matter.

The court had also earlier directed the agencies to file a status report in the Aircel-Maxis case which was adjourned sine die.

The Aircel-Maxis deal case, which emerged out of 2G spectrum cases, pertains to a grant by the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) to firm M/S Global Communication Holding Services Ltd for investment in Aircel.

The approval was granted in 2006 when P. Chidambaram was the union finance minister under the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA)-I government led by Dr Manmohan Singh.

The CBI and the ED had alleged that Chidambaram, as the finance minister, had granted approval to the deal beyond his capacity benefiting certain persons and received kickbacks.

The Aircel-Maxis deal is worth Rs 3,500 crore.
