New Delhi: At least eight police personnel, including Deputy SP Devendra Mishra, were killed and six were injured after they were fired upon by criminals in Kanpur on Thursday night. Also Read: 'Beware, Ganja May Be Renamed As Methi In UP': Akhilesh's Indirect Attack On Yogi Govt


According to reports, the police were ambushed when a team had gone to raid an area in search of a notorious gangster Vikas Dubey. The raid was carried out at around 1 am on the intervening night of July 2-3 in Bithoor area in Chaubepur in Kanpur.

Gangster Dubey has over 60 cases against him, including a murder charge for the killing of Santosh Shukla, a former UP minister in the Rajnath Singh government, inside a police station in 2001.

As the police party reached the Bikru village under Kanpur Dehat's Shivli Police Station area to make the arrest, at least eight to ten criminals opened indiscriminate fire from the rooftops. Shivrajpur Station Officer Mahesh Yadav, a sub-inspector and five constables were the others killed in the attack.

Among the deceased included 1 DSP, 3 Sub-Inspector, and 4 constables.

"Eight police personnel died, four were injured. They are being treated at the hospital. Police from neighboring districts Kannauj and Kanpur Dehat have also been called," Kanpur ADG JN Singh said. He told the media that the operation is still underway.

"STF has been deployed. IG/STF is reaching the spot. Kanpur STF is already at work. A large scale operation is being carried out", said HC Awasthi, DGP.

UP ADG, Law & Order Reached the spot to investigate the situation and said that strict action will be taken against the aides of Vikas Dubey and they will not let the sacrifice of 8 policemen go in vain.

In the latest development, the husband of Vikas Dubey's house-help has also been arrested for interrogation.

Till late at night, the police continued the search to catch the criminals. The borders of Kanpur was sealed following the attack.

The Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) and Inspector General of Police have reached the spot and forensics teams carrying out an examination of the area.

CM Yogi Adityanath has expressed his condolence to the families of the 8 Police personnel who lost their lives after being fired upon by criminals in Kanpur. He has directed DGP HC Awasthi to take strict action against criminals, he also sought a report of the incident and issued orders to seal the Uttar Pradesh borders.
