Kolkata: Seeking immediate fulfilment of job related demands, five female teacher who were in a contract to primary schools in West Bengal, tried to commit suicide yesterday by consuming a poisonous substance in front of the education department during demonstration.
The incident occurred in front of Bikash Bhavan, Saltlake. The teachers were holding protest against their transfer to places far off from their homes, when they attempted suicide. Soon the Teachers were rushed to state-run hospital. As per the early inputs, 3 of them are admitted in ICU.

3 teachers are admitted in RG kar hospital and 2 in NRS hospital. According to hospital sources, 40-50 mg of pesticides have entered their body, which caused damage to liver and respiratory system.
State Education Minister Bratya Basu rushed to the spot, but he did not make any comment.
Meanwhile, Bharatiya Janata Party State President Dilip Ghosh criticised local Govt over the incident. BJP spokesman Samik Bhattacharya too slammed the Mamata-ruled Bengal government.
"The incident shows how desperate people are getting here, especially teachers. The government is responsible. The government should look into the condition of teachers in Bengal. The government that has failed to create jobs or fill vacancies. We pray for the quick recovery of the teachers," the BJP leader said.
TMC Spokesperson Kunal Ghosh suspects incitement of opponents behind this incident. He reportedly said, "We hope the teachers get well soon. But we also need to see if they acted on someone's provocation."
