New Delhi: 102 students tested positive for the covid-19 in Government Medical College, Patiala. All the cases are expected to be of the Omicron variant, said Patiala's Divisional Commissioner Sandeep Hans.
"The samples have been sent for genome sequencing. Patiala administration has decided to shut all educational institutions," he further said.
As per the media reports, authorities have asked all the students to leave the hostel immediately.
Patiala is one of the worst-affected cities in Punjab. In the last week, Patiala and Pathankot districts reported over half of the state's total covid-19 caseload.
15 Students Tested Covid Positive At Thapar Varsity
Thapar University, Patiala, had also recorded Covid-19 incidents on campus. Following the report, the district health authorities designated one of the hostels where first-year students live as a containment zone.
According to Dr Sumeet Singh, the district epidemiologist, the majority of the students who tested positive are symptomatic.
Punjab Admin Considering To Close Educational Institutes
As the number of Covid-19 cases increases, the state administration is considering shutting schools, universities, and educational institutions.
Recently, Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi met with the state minister of medical education Rajkumar Verka and other officials to discuss the covid-19 scenario in the state.
