Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said India could become the world's third largest economy by "skilling its youth". Last year, India overtook the United Kingdom to become the fifth largest economy, as per figures by the International Monetary Fund. The IMF has predicted India to become the fourth largest economy by 2027.


In a virtual address during a Rozgar Mela, or employment fair, in Gujarat, PM Modi underscored the need to create a skilled workforce on a large scale to tap growing opportunities in various sectors.


"For the new opportunities being created in the country, we need to create skilled manpower on a large scale. India can achieve the target of becoming the third-largest economy only by skilling its youth," PM Modi said.


He said nearly 1.5 lakh youth in Gujarat were given government jobs during the last five years.


"I am delighted to share that most departments of NDA and the BJP-led government are working towards creating the maximum number of jobs and employment in the country continuously," said the Prime Minister.






He also said that 14 state governments led by the BJP were working on organising such employment fairs on a continuous basis. PM Modi said, "I congratulate all the youths and their family members who have been awarded offer letters by the government."


At the event, attended by Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, more than 2,500 youths were given appointment letters.

The Prime Minister said that over 18 lakh youths were provided different kinds of jobs other than in the government sector in the last few years. 


"I have been told that this year, the Gujarat state government has made preparations to give more jobs to youths above 25 years of age," he said.


PM Modi said the Gujarat government had kept the entire process of selection very transparent. Modi also said Gujarat would become the hub for semiconductors, which will further create more employment and job opportunities.


He asserted, “The central government has worked on a strong strategy to generate indirect and direct employment in the country."


"We focused on increasing employment through different policies infrastructure and development sector in the country," remarked the Prime Minister.

He also stressed the importance of the manufacturing sector for employment generation.


PM Modi also mentioned the allocation of Rs 10 lakh crore for the development of infrastructure across the nation. "The government has created an ecosystem to encourage start-ups in the country," the PM said.


He also claimed that over 90,000 start-ups were operating in the country today and most of them were based out of tier-II and tier-III cities. He said this was creating a lot of new employment opportunities and the youth were also getting motivated to go for self-employment.
