WhatsApp is going to end support for Android phones and iPhones running on outdated operating systems. Going by this, people with smartphones are having an operating system older than iOS 9 or Android 4.0.3 may soon find it very difficult to use the app.

WhatsApp's support page states that WhatsApp for iPhones requires iOS 9 or later, while for Android it requires Android 4.0.3 and newer.

Even though most users have better-updated smartphones, here are the phones that will lose WhatsApp support:

 iPhones

iPhone 4 and older models will lose WhatsApp support. So those using the following models need to update their operating system to iOS 9 or later in to continue using WhatsApp:

  • iPhone 4S

  • iPhone 5

  • iPhone 5S

  • iPhone 6

  • iPhone 6S

Android

As previously stated, WhatsApp will stop working on smartphones running on an Android version earlier than 4.0.3. Following are some of the smartphones running on the outdated OS:

  • HTC Desire

  • Motorola Droid Razr

  • Samsung Galaxy S2

  • LG Optimus Black

Those who are able to receive an OS update on their smartphones will be able to use WhatsApp, however, others may need to buy a new device.

To check OS details, iPhone users can go to Settings > General > Information to find information about the software version of your device. Android users can go to Settings > About Phone to check the smartphone's Android version.

Last year, WhatsApp ended support for smartphones running on iOS 8 or older, and with Android phones running on version 2.3.7 or older.
