NEW DELHI: Gone are the days when phone makers only used to focus on better cameras, processors and battery back-up, now companies are rushing to bring out new and exciting colour ranges to woo customers and boost sales.
There were times when people used to walk into a mobile store and buy the top-selling phone from their favourite brand without giving much thought to its colour. But with the passage of time, their priorities have changed. Now, colour is also an important factor people consider while purchasing mobile phones.
Sameer Alam, who runs a mobile store, said: "Mobile phones are so often introduced in dull colours like black and white, silver and grey, which are not striking enough. Whenever a different shade is launched, it catches the eyes of customers. After all, anything that attracts people, will sell."
When Sameer wanted to buy the gold colour variant of a top-selling phone for her sister, he was asked to drop the idea and purchase the Lilac Purple variant of Samsung's Galaxy S9 Plus. "The Lilac Purple colour grabbed her attention and she opted for it," he said.
"If you have been following the smartphone trends in last two years, users seem too tired of holding black, white and silver colours and have been looking for something vibrant, or something unique options. They don't use colour cases anymore but want different shades to be introduced "
Samsung, which is known for releasing multiple colour variants of its devices, has recently announced a new colour edition of its best-selling Galaxy S9+ smartphone: the Sunrise Gold. It is Samsung’s first device to feature a satin gloss finish which wraps the smartphone in an elegant glow and glimmer. The Sunrise Gold colour embodies class, with a modern and vibrant look, which helps young millennials stand out.
The Korean phone maker had in April launched last year's flagship phone Galaxy S8 in the Burgundy Red colour. As soon as it was out in stores, it sparked a lot of hype in the Android community. It did not only let consumers make a style statement but took elegance to an entirely new pedestal.
Also, there are unconfirmed reports that Apple may introduce at least four new colors for its 2018 iPhones. The company in April had announced iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus (PRODUCT) RED Special Edition, in a stunning red finish. Both phones sport a beautiful glass enclosure, now in red, with a matching aluminium band and a sleek black front. Apple launched iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus in red colour globally as part of its partnership with (PRODUCT) RED, an advocacy group dedicated to combating HIV/AIDS.
Apple's iPhone 8 in Gold colour has already won many hearts with its flashy appearance. The gold iPhone 8 colour option is the most stylish colour and gives premium look than the black and silver shades do.
Another player in the smartphone market, OnePlus has released three different colour options --Mirror Black, Midnight Black and a limited-edition Silk White-- at the launch of its latest flagship OnePlus 6. Each with its own unique aspects and feel.
