However, to counter the competition within phones of similar range, Nokia-licensee HMD Global has announced WhatsApp support for a new range of their phones - Nokia 8110 4G, a banana phone. The phone was launched in the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2018 as the next step in the already existing Nokia 8110. The phone runs on Smart Feature OS which is ultimately based on KaiOS. It can successfully provide access to several Google features like Google Assistant, Google Search and Google Maps.
HMD Global Chief Product Officer Juho Sarvikas took to Twitter and wrote, “Oh look, WhatsApp on KaiOS! Looking forward to going [banana emoticon]s” hinting that the company might as well integrate this feature in their phones.
Juho had earlier introduced nokia 8110 4G (Banana) and shared the picture of the phone on his Twitter account on June 4.
Both Jio and HMD Global are trying to target the affordable range of phones which are usually available without features like WhatsApp, YouTube or the Google services. With the introduction of KaiOS, it has become possible to explore and exploit this spectrum of phones as well.
