New Delhi: It seems there is little respite for motorists who are reeling under the fuel price hike. After a two-day hiatus, petrol and diesel prices were once again hiked on Thursday with petrol becoming dearer by up to 35 paise and diesel prices becoming costlier by 15 paise across metros, as per the price notification by state-owned fuel retailers.
After the latest hike, petrol is being retailed at Rs101.54 in Delhi, whereas diesel is being sold at Rs89.87. The cost of petrol is Rs107.75 per litre in financial capital Mumbai while diesel price has risen to Rs97.45 per litre. In Kolkata, petrol price reached Rs101.74 per litre and diesel price rose to Rs93.02 per litre.

Fuel prices differ from state to state depending on the incidence of local taxes such as value-added tax (VAT) and freight charges. Rajasthan levies the highest VAT on petrol and diesel in the country, followed by Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
The central and state taxes make up for 60 per cent of the retail selling price of petrol and over 54 per cent of diesel. Centre levies Rs32.90 per litre of excise duty on petrol and Rs 31.80 a litre on diesel. The prices vary in states on account of local taxes like VAT or freight charges.
