Ford Working On New Sub-4m SUV For India
Codenamed BX744, the small SUV is set to enter the market in 2021
Ford’s India plan includes offering a new SUV every year from 2020. The American carmaker is also developing new SUVs in partnership with Mahindra, the first outcome of which will be a mid-size SUV set to be launched in 2020. In 2021, Ford will introduce another new SUV in its portfolio, a sub-4m SUV codenamed BX744 that will go up against the Hyundai Venue and Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza. Ford is developing this new SUV by itself keeping the Indian car market in mind. Meanwhile, the SUVs that Ford and Mahindra will co-develop will use Mahindra’s powertrains and platforms.
The BX744 won’t be the first sub-4m SUV from Ford in India. In fact, the carmaker pioneered this segment with the EcoSport, which was launched in 2013. Four years since its launch, the EcoSport received a facelift and now, in late 2019, the small SUV is expected to get BS6 engines. The BX744 could replace the EcoSport in India, but we’re not certain whether it will retain the EcoSport moniker. We expect it to come equipped with both petrol and diesel engine options.
In the sub-4m SUV segment, the BX744 will rival existing models like the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Mahindra XUV300, Tata Nexon and Hyundai Venue. By 2021, we also expect new cars like the Renault HBC, Toyota’s version of the Vitara Brezza, Kia’s sub-4m SUV based on the Venue and a new Jeep sub-4m SUV to join the list.
