- After farmer leaders' rejected the Government's proposal over MSP, Union Minister Arjun Munda said, "We want to do good and several opinions can be given for doing so, as we always welcome good opinions... But to find a way on how that opinion will be fruitful, the only way is conversation. Through conversation, a solution will surely come out..."
Farmer leaders engaged in the 'Delhi Chalo' agitation have rebuffed the MSP proposal put forth by the Centre, asserting that it does not serve the best interests of farmers. In response, they have declared their intention to proceed with the planned march towards the national capital on Wednesday, February 21st.
Amid ongoing Farmer's protest, a group of farmers was detained earlier today in Haryana's Manesar while attempting to march towards Delhi.
The Punjab and Haryana High Court has issued directives to protesting farmers, urging them to abstain from using tractors and JCBs for their travel to Delhi. Citing limitations under the Motor Vehicle Act, the court has recommended utilizing buses instead. Additionally, the court has emphasized the importance of controlling large gatherings at state borders
Protesting farmers at the Punjab-Haryana border in Shambhu have escalated their demonstrations by bringing in heavy machinery, including hydraulic cranes and earth movers.
Delhi Minister and AAP leader Gopal Rai commented on the farmers' protests for MSP: "...If the government wants to make India a developed nation, it can't be done without increasing the income of farmers. The govt should take a decision on this soon."
Farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher says, "Internet services have been suspended in 7 districts of Punjab. The Punjab Government should clarify whether they too gave permission, whether too want it...Is your operation going on by colluding with Haryana?...Internet should not be suspended in Punjab...I don't think the Centre has such rights to suspend the internet without asking the State Government..." As per PTI, Farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal addressed a press conference at the Shambhu Border, “The way farmers were treated at the (Shambhu) border is condemnable. The main reason for inviting Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann to the meetings was to raise the issue of barricading along the borders, and that people of his state (Punjab) are facing tear gas shelling from neighbouring state. He guaranteed to take notice of the situation, but he hasn’t. He should have put this issue in front of ministers. And today, Haryana DGP in his statement said that we haven’t used pellet guns and tear gas; we request Supreme Court to take suo moto cognisance against those who have done this act.”
"Today, we lost our second brother. These (tear gas) shells are hazardous for those who are suffering from asthma, and people are dying. The number of farmers is increasing at the borders each day and the government should take not of this, and find a resolution to our issues," says SKM (Non-Political) leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal. (PTI)
"There is a curfew-like situation in Haryana, and the unfortunate thing is that Haryana DGP says that they have not resorted to force anywhere, neither they have used tear gas shells. However, everyone knows how people (farmers) were target on the border for three days. It seems like DGP is less an officer and more a representative of a political party," says SKM (Non-Political) leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal in a press conference. (PTI)
"The Haryana CM should also be a part of the meeting (between farmer unions and Centre), because protest is in his state too and farmers of his too have demands. Oil seeds and millets were not included in yesterday's proposal (on MSP), they should also be included. Also, if the government is thinking that this (proposal) is implemented only in Punjab and not in Haryana, that should not happen," farmer leader Gurnam Singh Charuni tells PTI.
Congress leader Renuka Chowdhury commented on the ongoing 'Delhi Chalo' protest saying, "Last time when the farmers protested, they had the same demands and the BJP made the same promises. Are they terrorists? They are our citizens. Tear gas, water cannon, barricades, what is all of this?... If they stop farming, what will we do?... Piyush Goyal said that will give MSP on only 5 crops, what will the rest of the farmers do?"
The farmer leaders said that the 'Delhi Chalo' march has been put on standby as the Centre has proposed a 5-year plan for MSP during the fourth round of talks. The leaders said they will hold discussions on the proposal and resume the march 'peacefully' on February 21.

As the farmers' protest has entered the seventh day, the panel of Union Ministers including Agriculture and Farmer Welfare Minister Arjun Munda, Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal, and Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai convened the fourth round of discussions with the farmer leaders on February 18 at the Mahatma Gandhi State Institute of Public Administration in Chandigarh's Sector 26, after which the government proposed a new scheme of MSP. The proposal and reply for this will be discussed today by the farmers.
Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann was also present at the meeting. The centre and the protesting farmer leaders have previously engaged in three other meetings on February 8,12 and 15 but failed to reach any resolution.
Centre has however, agreed to withdraw the cases filed against the farmers during their protest in 2020-21.
The farmer leaders had emphasised their demand for an ordinance on getting a legal guarantee to MSP and stressed that the entire country was looking towards PM Modi to address the farmers' grievances.
“If the government wants resolution of farmers' protest, then it should bring an ordinance with an immediate effect that it will enact a law on MSP, then discussion can proceed further. It (Centre) can bring the ordinance overnight if it wants to,” farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher said a day before the crucial meeting.
He also stated that if the Centre agreed to meet their demands then the protesting farmers would call off their protests and the "ball was now in the Centre's court."
The Samyukta Kisan Morcha is set to gherao the residences of BJP leaders in Punjab for three days starting from February 20 to pressure the Centre into accepting the farmers' demands.
During the last week, the Haryana Police launched tear gas shells and water cannons at protesting farmers to stop them from marching towards the national capital, which resulted in a few farmers getting injured at the Shambhu border. On the other hand, a Haryana police sub-inspector posted at the border, died on Friday.
Over 200 farmers' unions from Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh have joined hands to protest against the Centre for Minimum Support Price (MSP) for their crops, a loan waiver, implementation of Swaminathan Commission's recommendations, and pension for farmers and farm labourers.
