As the farmers' protest has entered the seventh day, the panel of Union Ministers including Agriculture and Farmer Welfare Minister Arjun Munda, Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal, and Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai convened the fourth round of discussions with the farmer leaders on February 18 at the Mahatma Gandhi State Institute of Public Administration in Chandigarh's Sector 26, after which the government proposed a new scheme of MSP. The proposal and reply for this will be discussed today by the farmers.
Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann was also present at the meeting. The centre and the protesting farmer leaders have previously engaged in three other meetings on February 8,12 and 15 but failed to reach any resolution.
Centre has however, agreed to withdraw the cases filed against the farmers during their protest in 2020-21.
The farmer leaders had emphasised their demand for an ordinance on getting a legal guarantee to MSP and stressed that the entire country was looking towards PM Modi to address the farmers' grievances.
“If the government wants resolution of farmers' protest, then it should bring an ordinance with an immediate effect that it will enact a law on MSP, then discussion can proceed further. It (Centre) can bring the ordinance overnight if it wants to,” farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher said a day before the crucial meeting.
He also stated that if the Centre agreed to meet their demands then the protesting farmers would call off their protests and the "ball was now in the Centre's court."
The Samyukta Kisan Morcha is set to gherao the residences of BJP leaders in Punjab for three days starting from February 20 to pressure the Centre into accepting the farmers' demands.
During the last week, the Haryana Police launched tear gas shells and water cannons at protesting farmers to stop them from marching towards the national capital, which resulted in a few farmers getting injured at the Shambhu border. On the other hand, a Haryana police sub-inspector posted at the border, died on Friday.
Over 200 farmers' unions from Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh have joined hands to protest against the Centre for Minimum Support Price (MSP) for their crops, a loan waiver, implementation of Swaminathan Commission's recommendations, and pension for farmers and farm labourers.
