Madurai: Doctors at the Madurai Government Rajaji Hospital have saved the life of a 29-year-old woman by successfully removing a 7 kg tumour from her abdomen.


Sharmila Devi, who is a resident of Parktown in Madurai was admitted to the department of obstetrics and gynaecology at the Government Rajaji hospital following abdominal swelling and pain. She has been suffering from pain for the past 6 months as her stomach visibly increased in size.


Upon examination, the medical team found a 30x30 cm cyst in her belly. Following this, the doctors decided to surgically remove the tumour as it was weighing about 7 kg in size.

Subsequently, a team of doctors, led by Dr N Sumathy, professor and HOD at the department of obstetrics and gynaecology, Dr Josephine and Dr M Sudha, along with anaesthetist professor Dr Selvakumar and Dr Sudharshan performed the tough surgery and successfully removed the huge tumour with great care saving patient’s life. The woman is out of danger for now and recovering well.
