Udhagamandalam: The desperate and poverty-stricken parents were arrested on July 29 in Nilgiris for selling their children.


Couple arrested for selling their children


The Ooty all-women police have arrested a middle-aged husband-wife duo for selling children and remanded in judicial custody for the offence on July 29. The district child protection department has rescued three siblings who were sold over a period of two years.


Who bought the children?


According to ABP Nadu, the couple, Robin and Monisha from the Kandal area in Ooty, had sold their elder daughter, 3-year-old, to Monisha’s sister two years ago, while the second daughter, who is aged two years, was sold to a couple in Tirupur one and half years ago. The duo also sold their third child, a four-month-old baby boy, to a couple in Salem three months ago.


Neighbors rang the alarm bell


The offence came to the police’s notice when the local residents alerted NGO Bharathiar Nala Sangam about the sale of kids and they brought the issue to the notice of the district child department on Wednesday (July 28).


The district child protection department officials held an inquiry the same day and rescued all the three kids yesterday (July 29). They also lodged a complaint against the couple with the Ooty all-woman police.


Rescued children sent to safe custody


The three rescued kids were sent to safe custody now. The girls are sent to the children’s home in Ooty, while the baby boy is kept in the Ooty Government Medical College and Hospital for the time being.


Meanwhile, the parents are booked under Sections 317 and 370 of the Indian Penal Code and Section 81 of the Juvenile Justice Act.
