New Delhi: A cyclonic storm which has been named 'Nivar' by Iran is set to hit the Tamil Nadu coast on Wednesday. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) 'the well-marked low pressure over southwest Bay of Bengal is very likely to intensify further into a cyclonic storm during next 24 hrs & move towards Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coast'

The cyclone which will be the season's first is expected to bring heavy rainfall activity from Monday onwards and is likely to make between Mamallapuram and Karaikal by Wednesday afternoon.


A report by Times of India says that widespread rain is likely in Chennai as the storm comes closer. The report says that rainfall of 6cm to 10cm is expected. Heavy rain is expected in Villupuram, Cuddalore, Puducherry, and Chennai on Wednesday when it is expected to make lanfall. A report by New Indian Express says that the district Nagapattinam has been put on alert and fishermen have been advised by the district administration to keep their boats safe.
