Daniil Medvedev beat US Open champion Dominic Thiem 4-6, 7-6(2), 6-4 in a pulsating 3-set grand finale to win the Nitto ATP Finals played at the O2 Arena in London on Sunday (November 22)


The win in the men's singles title clash at the year end tournament happened to be the biggest win for Medvedev in his professional tennis career so far.

The aggressive Russian baseliner also became only the fourth tennis player to beat top 3 players at the season finale of the marquee event since the inception of the ATP tour in 1990.


Medvedev had a brilliant run in the tournament defeating five-time champion Novak Djokovic in the group stages and World No. 2 Rafael Nadal in the semifinals to make it to his maiden final at the showpiece event featuring the top 8 ranked singles players on the ATP World Tour.

Medvedev also became the the first player from Russia to win the year-end championships since Nikolay Davydenko in 2009.

“I always said before this tournament that it would be an amazing story if, here in London, where the tournament was for [12] years, that the first champion would be Russian and the last champion would be Russian, too," Medvedev said during the trophy ceremony.

"A lot of thanks to Nikolay Davydenko for being an inspiration for many kids [like] me [by] winning here. I hope to continue doing his job.”
