Duration Of Monsoon Session Can't Be Extended Due To Covid: Maha CM To Guv

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Friday wrote a letter to Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari, in which he defended the government's decision of holding the monsoon session of the state legislature only for two days starting July 5, saying that its duration cannot be extended in view of the coronavirus situation.


Thackeray said the duration of the legislature session cannot be extended in view of the second wave of the pandemic and the threat of a possible third wave.

Hit by pandemic, Cafe Coffee Day withdraws a lot of vending machines from customer locations

 Coffee Day Global Ltd, which operates coffee chain Cafe Coffee Day (CCD), discarded about 30,000 custom-made cabinets used for vending machines at its customers' places in the last financial year as pandemic took a toll on demand.

According to a regulatory filing by Coffee Day Global Ltd's (CDGL) parent firm Coffee Day Enterprises Ltd on Wednesday, a lot of vending machines installed by the company have been withdrawn from customers' locations in view of the pandemic situation.

Coffee Day Global Ltd (CDGL) reported a consolidated net loss of Rs 306.54 crore for the financial year ended on March 31, 2021 and its revenue from operation was down 73.4 per cent Rs 400.81 crore.

For the January-March quarter, the company reported widening of its net loss to Rs 94.81 crore and its revenue from operation was 61.4 per cent down to Rs 141.04 crore.

According to CDGL, in the earlier year, to attract new customers, the vending division of the company used to install certain custom-made cabinets at customers' locations.

Custom-built cabinets are fixtures and cannot be removed and do not have any salvage value.

"In this situation, 29,996 cabinets are discarded and the balance written down value aggregating to Rs 79.78 crore is fully depreciated during the year," it said.

Moreover, one of its lenders has also approached the insolvency tribunal NCLT for recovery of its dues.

Ladakh reports 17 new COVID-19 cases, tally at 20,090

Ladakh recorded 17 new Covid cases, pushing the tally to 20,090, while 34 patients were discharged after being recovered, taking the overall recoveries to 19,626, officials said on Friday.

Out of the total cases, 10 were reported in Leh and seven in Kargil. While, a total of 3,663 sample reports in Ladakh, including 2,205 from Leh and 1,458 cases from Kargil, were found negative on Thursday, they added.

Of the total 34 recoveries, 26 patients in Leh and eight in Kargil were discharged, they said.

The number of active cases has come down to 262, of which 225 are in Leh and 37 are in Kargil district, the officials said.

No deaths have been reported for the past 12 days in Ladakh.

A total of 202 people have died due Covid in the union territory. The death toll in Kargil stands at 58 while the rest 144 patients have died in Leh district, they said.

Puducherry adds 175 fresh COVID-19 cases; 8 deaths push toll

The union territory of Puducherry recorded 175 new coronavirus cases during the last 24 hours pushing the overall tally to 1,17,640, a senior official of the Department of Health and Family Welfare Services said on Friday.

While the number of fresh cases declined, the fatalities rose to eight, Director of Health S Mohan Kumar said.

The Puducherry region recorded six of the deaths in the last 24 hours ending 10 AM while Karaikal and Yanam regions reported one fatality each as the toll went up to 1,759.

The eight victims were in the age group ranging between 44 and 88 years. Two of the deceased had no comorbidities, he said.

The union territory had reported two deaths on Thursday and one fatality on Wednesday.

The 175 new Covid-19 cases were identified at the end of the examination of 8,315 samples.

While the Puducherry region accounted for 131 of 175 new cases, Karaikal logged 27 followed by Mahe (15) and Yanam (two).

The active cases stood at 2,232 (326 in hospitals and remaining 1,906 in home isolation).

The Health department Director said 276 patients recovered and were discharged in the last 24 hours.

Mizoram reports 278 new COVID-19 cases, tally rises to 20,770

At least 278 more people, including 13 inmates of Aizawl central jail, have tested positive for COVID-19 in Mizoram, pushing the state's tally to 20,770, a health official said on Friday.

The COVID-19 death toll rose to 94 as a 73-year-old man from Kolasib district succumbed to the infection on Thursday night, he said.

Aizawl district reported 167 new COVID-19 cases followed by Kolasib (34) and Hnahthial (26), the official said.

Sixty-five new cases were confirmed through RT-PCR test in Zoram Medical College (ZMC) near Aizawl, 13 cases were detected through TrueNat test and 200 were detected through Rapid Antigen Test, he said.

Seven patients have travel history, while the rest 271 were found to have locally contracted the infection.

The single-day positivity rate was 6.93 per cent as the fresh cases were detected from 4,006 samples, the official said, adding that 131 patients have developed symptoms of COVID-19.

Mizoram currently has 4,131 active COVID-19 active cases, while 16,545 people have recovered from the virus.

The state has tested over 4.88 lakh samples for COVID-19 till date.

Bengal Logs 1,501 Fresh COVID-19 Cases, 27 Fatalities

 West Bengal reported 1,501 fresh cases of COVID-19 on Thursday, raising the tally to 15,01,284, while the death toll climbed to 17,735 with 27 more fatalities, a health department bulletin said. The state now has 20,170 active cases and 14,63,379 patients have recovered from the disease so far, including 1,889 since Wednesday, it said. Paschim Medinipur recorded the highest number of 141 fresh cases followed by North 24 Parganas (136), Darjeeling (135) and Kolkata (127).

The single-shot Johnson and Johnson Covid-19 vaccine produces a strong response against the Delta variant of the virus, the company has said.




A study of blood samples taken from eight inoculated people showed that the vaccine elicits neutralizing antibody activity over the course of at least eight months against all variants, including Delta, which was first detected in India.


Recoveries over four times new Covid cases in Karnataka

As evidence of the curve flattening, with 14,302 patients discharged, recoveries were four times the 3,203 new Covid cases in Karnataka in a day, said the state health bulletin on Thursday.

"Recoveries shot up to 27,46,544, with 14,302 patients discharged during the day, while 3,203 new cases registered on Wednesday rose the state's Covid tally to 28,47,013, including 65,312 active cases," said the bulletin.

As epicentre of the pandemic, Bengaluru reported only 676 fresh cases on Wednesday, taking its Covid tally to 12,14,235, including 33,516 active cases, while 11,65,074 recovered so far, with 10,840 discharged in the last 24 hours.

Following Bengaluru, Mysuru reported 366 new cases, Dakishna Kannada 285 and Hassan 281 on Wednesday.

Delta Covid Variant Predicted To Become Predominant Mutation Across US: Medical Body

The Delta variant is the second most prevalent coronavirus mutation in the US and is predicted to become the predominant one in the coming weeks, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director Rochelle Walensky said on Thursday.


"An estimated 25 percent of all reported SARS-COV-2 sequences nationwide are the Delta variants, and in some regions of the country, nearly one in two sequences is a Delta variant," Walensky added, as quoted by Sputnik.

The United Arab Emirates announced on Thursday a travel ban on citizens to India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Namibia, Zambia, Congo, Uganda, Sierra Leone, Liberia, South Africa and Nigeria, state news agency (WAM) reported.


The Foreign Ministry and the National Emergency, Crisis and Disaster Management Authority stressed that, with the start of the travel season, citizens need to comply with all precautionary and preventive measures related to COVID-19, WAM added.


Dubai had said on June 19 that an entry ban on those who in the past 14 days had visited India, Nigeria and South Africa would ease from June 23.
