Coronavirus HIGHLIGHTS Updates, Tuesday, June 22, 2021: The daily Covid count in India continues to be below 1 lakh for the past five days. Noticing slight improvement in the Covid situation, several states have relaxed lockdown restrictions and moved towards unlocking several activities in controlled manner. Meanwhile, three states - Maharashtra, Kerala and Madhya Pradesh - are reporting cases of the delta plus variant in the country. State health minister Rajesh Tope said that the state has reported 21 cases of the Delta plus variant. Kerala government officials also informed that presence of the Delta plus variant has been found in samples collected from Palakkad and Pathanamth districts.

22 Cases Of Delta Plus Mutant Found In Maharashtra, MP, Kerala: Govt

Twenty-two cases of the Delta plus variant of the coronavirus have been detected in India, with 16 of them being reported from Maharashtra and the remaining from Madhya Pradesh and Kerala, the government said on Tuesday.


India is among the nine countries where the Delta plus mutation has been found so far, Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan said at a press briefing, underlining that it is currently a "variant of interest" and has not yet been classified as a "variant of concern".

Delhi Logs 134 New Infections In Last 24 Hrs, Mumbai Adds 570 Fresh Cases

The national capital recorded 134 more COVID-19 cases with a positivity rate of 0.20 percent, while eight more people succumbed to the infection, according to data shared by the city's health department here on Tuesday.


Meanwhile, Mumbai reported 570 new coronavirus infections and 10 fatalities on Tuesday, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said. With this, the tally of cases rose to 7,22,461 and death toll increased to 15,315.

Delta Plus Variant Found In 10 Countries, 22 Cases India So Far: Govt

Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan said on Tuesday that the Delta Plus variant of COVID-19 has been found in 10 countries including India. During a press conference, the health secretary said that over 22 cases of Delta Plus have been found in India besides the regular Delta variant.

Rahul Gandhi Playing Politics Over Covid Crisis: BJP On Congress' 'White Paper'

The BJP on Tuesday accused Rahul Gandhi of playing politics over the coronavirus crisis after the Congress leader released a "white paper" on the Centre's handling of the pandemic.


Hours after Gandhi released the document, BJP national spokesperson Sambit Patra told a press conference, "Since yesterday we have been fearing this. Whenever something good happens in our fight against coronavirus, the Congress and Rahul Gandhi specially do something to derail it."

90% of Haryana Police personnel have received first dose of Covid vaccine: DGP

Ninety per cent of Haryana Police personnel have received the first dose of COVID-19 vaccine while 65 per cent have taken both doses, Director General of Police (DGP) Manoj Yadava said on Tuesday.

The Haryana Police has nearly 60,000 personnel, including home guards and Special Police Officers (SPOs). The vaccination drive for police personnel, who are included in the frontline workers category, started on February 4.

"So far, 53,924 officers and jawans have got the first anti-Covid shot and more than 38,988 have received both doses," Yadava said in a statement. He said 90 per cent of the police personnel have received the first dose and are waiting for the completion of the mandatory gap period to take the second dose.

Around 65 per cent of the police personnel have taken both doses of the vaccine, he added. Yadava stressed that the protective shield of the vaccine is very important to prevent the infection. In addition, all precautions and safety guidelines must be followed.

"While working on the frontline, policemen have to protect themselves against the infection along with (ensuring) the safety of others. With a good pace of vaccination, we are striving to achieve the target of 100 per cent vaccination soon," he said.

"It's clear that management of the first and second wave of COVID was disastrous, & we've tried to point out the reasons behind it. I would even go so far as to say that there might be waves even after the third wave of COVID19 as the virus is mutating," Rahul Gandhi said.

It is a blueprint on how to react to the third wave... to provide the government with information and insight on what went wrong during the second wave of Covid-19."

US to distribute 55 million Covid-19 vaccines to Asia, Africa & Latin America

In an official statement, the White House US President Joe Biden's plan to allocate 55 million doses, part of the 80 million doses of Covid vaccines he had pledged to grant to the world by June end. 


As per the statement, around 41 million of the 55 million Covid-19 vaccines will be shared through COVAX, including approximately 14 million doses for Latin America and the Caribbean, approximately 16 million for Asia, and approximately 10 million for Africa.

Earlier this month, a 65-year-old woman from Madhya Pradesh’s capital Bhopal reported to be the first case of Delta plus variant in India. 

Centre to Consider Insurance Cover to Workers Performing Last Rites of Covid-19 Victims

The Central government has told the Supreme Court that it would consider granting insurance cover on the lines of other frontline workers to those working in crematoriums and helping conduct last rites of Covid-19 victims, terming the issue a "valid concern". A special vacation bench comprising Justices Ashok Bhushan and M R Shah, which reserved verdict on two pleas seeking ex-gratia compensation of Rs 4 lakh to the dependents of those who died of Covid-19, was told by lawyer Gaurav Kumar Bansal that the people working in crematoriums have been left without any insurance cover.
