Chennai: Today is National Doctors' Day and there isn't a better time to congratulate the Covid warriors who despite having chinks in their armoury have played a pivotal role in putting a great fight to bring down the Covid numbers. Nationwide, the number of doctors who died during the second wave of the Covid has risen to 798.
The country was hit hardest by the second wave of Covid. Since the first wave, doctors have been rescuing corona patients. Doctors have been fighting against corona regardless of their lives.
As many as 798 doctors across the country have died since the second wave hit the country, according to the Indian Medical Association. The highest death toll was 128 in Delhi, 115 in Bihar, 79 in Uttar Pradesh, and 62 in West Bengal. It also states that 51 doctors have died in Tamil Nadu so far. It is noteworthy that a total of 736 doctors died during the first wave of the corona.
The Rs 50 lakh life insurance scheme for health workers under the Prime Minister's Welfare Scheme was announced on March 30. This insurance plan applies to all health workers, including community health workers and private health workers.
The Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr. Harshvardhan announced that the government has decided to introduce a new category of 'Wards of COVID Warriors' in medical admissions under the Central Reserve MBBS seats in the 2020-21 academic year. The heirs of those who died due to Covid-19 treting the Covid patients will be selected by the Central Reserve.

Meanwhile, the Union Health Ministry said that final year MBBS students can be utilised under the proper training and supervision of teachers in the field of telemedicine service and treatment of those suffering from mild goiter. It said that individuals who have provided services under Corona management will be given priority in the forthcoming formal government recruitment after completing at least 100 days of treatment of Covid patients.
