Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu surrendered before a court here Friday and was sent to the Patiala central Jail, a day after being sentenced to one-year rigorous imprisonment by the Supreme Court in a 1988 road rage death case.
The 58-year-old surrendered shortly after 4 pm, and was taken for the mandatory medical examination, conducted at the Mata Kaushalya Hospital. After the medical check-up, he was taken to the jail in a police jeep.
The MP-MLA court on Friday issued a non-bailable warrant against AAP leader Somnath Bharti in connection with an FIR lodged in Amethi district. Bharti was booked in January last year for making derogatory remarks on the condition of hospitals and schools in Uttar Pradesh.
Later, police added sections of defamation to the FIR and submitted it in the court. Based on this, the court issued the warrant against Bharti.

A massive fire broke out at the Jhandewalan cycle market in central Delhi on Friday afternoon, news agency PTI quoted officials as saying. The information about the blaze was reported at 2.05 pm following which 27 fire tenders were rushed to the spot, they said, adding that the flames were brought under control by 4.30 pm.
No causality has been reported so far, they said.

A portion of an under-construction tunnel in the Makerkote area of Ramban in Jammu and Kashmir collapsed Thursday. Several people are feared trapped, reported news agency ANI. Meanwhile, rescue operations are underway in the area.
According to the Ramban Deputy Commissioner, one person has been rescued.
"A part of an under-construction tunnel collapsed at Khooni Nala, Jammu-Srinagar National Highway in the Makerkote area of Ramban. 6 to 7 feared trapped; one person rescued. Rescue operation is underway," the Deputy Commissioner was quoted by ANI

SC Defers Gyanvapi Masjid Case Hearing To Friday
Supreme Court on Thursday asked the trial court in Varanasi not to proceed with the Gyanvapi Mosque case till Friday, May 20, as it deferred the matter for a hearing tomorrow at 3 pm after being informed that counsel for Hindu devotees is indisposed. The SC bench today resumed hearing a plea of the Committee of Management Anjuman Intezamia Masjid which manages Gyanvapi mosque in Varanasi.
In the prior hearing on Tuesday, the bench issued notices to the Hindu petitioners while refusing to stay the ongoing proceedings before the lower court.
Centre To Review Covid-19 Vaccination Program With States, UTs
The work of vaccination against the coronavirus is going on in the country at a rapid pace. So far more than 190 crore doses of vaccine have been given in the country. Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan will hold a review meeting with all the states and union territories on Friday regarding the Covid 19 vaccination program, said sources.
According to the Cowin website, more than 191 crore vaccine doses have been administered in the country so far. Out of these, more than 100 crore people have been given the first dose while about 88 crore second dose has been given. At the same time, precaution doses have been given to more than three crore people.
