Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Sunday resigned from the CM post as the state remains in the grip of an ethnic violence for over two years. Singh reached the Raj Bhavan in Imphal on Sunday and submitted his letter of resignation to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla ahead of the Budget session starting Monday.

The new CM pick is expected to be announced shortly by the party ahead of the assemby session.

Singh was accompanied by 14 MLAs from BJP and Naga People's Front (NPF). Manipur BJP president and senior party leader Sambit Patra were also the part of the delegation.

In his letter, Singh said, ""It has been an honour to serve the people of Manipur thus far. I am extremely grateful to the central government for time actions, interventions, developmental work and implementation of various projects for safeguarding the interests of every single Manipuri."

Singh's resignation comes amid a political crisis in the state with Congress preparing to bring a no-confidence motion on the first day of the assembly's Budget session.

A series of meetig unfolded in a bid to control the damage. Senior BJP leader Sambit Patra who is the party's northeast in-charge was rushed to Imphal to ensure that the party does not face embarassment in case of a floor test, reported NDTV quoting sources.

On Saturday, Singh reached Delhi amid the speculation of a floor test. Earlier in the day, he convened a meeting with BJP-led ruling alliance MLAs at the CM Secretariat.

On Friday, Manipur Congress president Keisham Meghachandra said the party would move a no-confidence motion against singh in the state assembly.

"Brahmastra Missile will surely hit one of the Double Engine! Congress party set to move No Confidence Motion anytime soon," Meghachandra said in a post on X.

The state, which has been witnessing violent clashes between majority Meiteis and tribal Kuki groups also saw political instability after Conrad Sangma's National Peoples' Party (NPP) withdrew support to the Biren Singh-led government last November.

The party alleged that the government "completely failed to resolve the crisis and restore normalcy" in the state.
