Karnataka Govt Likely To Decide On Panchamasali Lingayats Quota
There are a lot of rumors that the Panchamasali Lingayats' demand for a higher reservation will be decided at the Karnataka cabinet meeting on Thursday.
Since Panchamasali Lingayats, a subset of the dominant Veerashaiva-Lingayat community, are considered to be the BJP's core voter base, the move is significant ahead of assembly elections in April and May of next year.
The Panchamasali community wants to be in category 2A of the OBC reservation matrix, which accounts for 15% of the total. They are currently categorized as 3B (5%).
The BJP's Bijapur City MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal, who is at the forefront of the Panchamasali Lingayat reservation agitation, gave the indication that the state cabinet would make a decision in this regard.
"There will be a historic show of strength regarding reservation. Bommai (Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai) will make a historic decision...you will see Bommai making an official announcement tomorrow," he told reporters.
