Taliban Close Bank Accounts of Officials From Former Afghanistan Govt: Report

Bank accounts of some former government officials who fled Afghanistan have been closed by the Taliban.


Anaamullah Samangani, a member of the Taliban Cultural Commission, said on Thursday that the Taliban has closed some bank accounts of officials who worked in the previous government, TOLOnews reported. 


“Accounts of some officials from the previous government--most of whom fled the country--have been closed," he said as quoted in the report. 


At the same time, a letter posted on social media by the Afghanistan Central Bank (Da Afghanistan Bank ) said that accounts of some ministers, deputy ministers, governors, deputy governors, members of parliament, members of provincial councils, mayors and other VIPs should be closed in other internal banks, and be reported to Central Bank.


Mohammad Zamir, a Kabul resident, told TOLOnews: “Their accounts should be closed, it must be made clear about the money in their accounts.”

Breaking News LIVE Updates, September 10, 2021:  India's Permanent Representative to United Nations TS Tirumurti has once again expressed concerns over misuse of Afghan territory, saying that it should not be used to threaten or attack any country or to shelter or train terrorists, or to plan or to finance terrorist acts by the Taliban.


“As witnessed from the deplorable terrorist attack at Kabul Airport last month, terrorism continues to pose a serious threat to Afghanistan. It's therefore important that commitments made in this regard are respected and adhered to,” TS Tirumurti said.


“The situation in Afghanistan continues to be very fragile. As its immediate neighbour and a friend to its people, the current situation is of direct concern to us,” he said at UNSC Debate on Afghanistan, as quoted by News Agency ANI.


In another significant development, West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee will on Friday file her nomination for the by-polls to the Bhabanipur seat. According to the schedule announced by the Election Commission of India (ECI), the by-election in Bhabanipur Assembly Constituency in West Bengal will be held on September 30.


The Election Commission also informed that by-polls will also be held in Samserganj and Jangipur of West Bengal and Pipli constituency of Odisha on the same date. The counting of votes will be taken up on October 3.


The Bhabanipur assembly seat was vacated by the West Bengal Agriculture Minister Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay in May, making way for West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to contest from Bhabanipur seat.
