Background

Breaking News Highlights UPDATES: Prime Minister Narendra Modi Sunday released the manifesto of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the Lok Sabha elections 2024. The manifesto focuses on the youth, women, farmers, and the poor. PM Modi handed over the manifesto copies to representatives of the four broad groups, calling in GYAN -- Gareeb (poor), Yuva (youth), Annadata (women) and Nari Shakti (women).

He said the country needed a stable government with majority at a time the world was going through uncertain times.

Talking of "uncertain times", Iran launched an attack on Israel late Saturday, in what it called a "relatiation" to the April 1 airstrike on its embassy in the Syrian capital of Damascus, which it had blamed on Israel. Notably, this was the first direct attack on Israel by Iran, prompting heightened tensions in the region. The United States quickly pledged unwavering support for Israel as the situation unfolded, while India asked for "de-escalation" of the situation and "exercise of restraint". “We call for immediate de-escalation, exercise of restraint, stepping back from violence and return to the path of diplomacy,” it added. “It is vital that security and stability are maintained in the region,” the MEA said in a statement.

Back home, hectic activities are happening on the election front.

Reacting to the BJP Manifesto, the Congress has listed what it misses. At a press conference, Congress leader Supriya Shrinate said the document has no mention of government jobs, legal guarantee on MSP, 50% reservation for women in government jobs, Inflation, Manipur, and Ladakh.

Meanwhile, it's a festive day in the country, with several states celebrating one festival or the other. While it's Poila Baisakh in Bengal, Kerala is celebrating Vishu, and Tamil Nadu Puthandu. In Assam, the seven-day festival of Bohag Bihu started on Sunday, April 14.

April 14 also happens to be the birth anniversary of Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar.

Political leaders cutting across party lines have extended greetings to the people of the nation.
