Chief Justice of India NV Ramana on Friday said that people hesitate to approach the police in times of despair as its image is tarnished due to corruption, excesses, lack of impartiality and close nexus with the political class.
Delivering the 19th DP Kohli Memorial Lecture of CBI on "Democracy: Role and Responsibilities of Investigative Agencies", CJI Ramana said police officers often complained of being harassed after regime change.
“Often police officers approach us that they are being harassed after change of regime and when regime changes consequences are suffered. First is to gain social legitimacy and that is by breaking the political executive nexus,” Bar and Bench quoted CJI Ramana as saying.
Chief Justice of India Ramana said the police reforms have been on the government’s agenda for more than 50 years and yet nothing has happened.
Amidst worldwide pressure on India to condemn Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with visiting Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Friday evening.
PM Modi Meets Russian Foreign Minister
PM Modi and Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov had a 40-minute meeting. In the last two weeks, the Prime Minister has not officially met any other visiting Ministers, including those from the United Kingdom, China, Austria, Greece, and Mexico.
According to a press release issued by PMO, Foreign Minister Lavrov informed Prime Minister Modi of the situation in Ukraine, including ongoing peace talks. The Prime Minister reaffirmed his plea for an immediate end to violence and expressed India's willingness to assist in any way with peace efforts.
The Russian Foreign Minister also provided an update to Prime Minister Modi on the status of decisions made during the India-Russia bilateral summit in December 2021.
CBI Gets Custody Of Anil Deshmukh, Sachin Waze For Investigation In Corruption Case
Meanwhile, two courts in Mumbai on Friday granted CBI the custody of former Maharashtra home minister Anil Deshmukh, his two aides and dismissed police officer Sachin Waze for investigation in connection with a corruption case.
NCP leader Deshmukh (71) and his aides Sanjeev Palande and Kundan Shinde are currently in judicial custody in a money laundering case. They are lodged at Mumbai's Arthur Road prison.
Deshmukh's bail application was rejected by a PMLA court in March. He was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on November 1 last year.

Union Minister Anurag Thakur on Saturday said, "At the end of the year, BJP will come again in Himachal Pradesh & Gujarat as well. Modi Ji is globally known as the world's most loved leader...
