A man from Punjab was booked for allegedly attempting to transport over 500 grams of opium to New Zealand via courier, police here said on Thursday, as reported by news agency PTI. Opium packets weighing 589 grams were found hidden in boxes containing cosmetic products and clothes, Gurugram Police said.
The state Narcotics Control Bureau received information on Wednesday about a parcel allegedly containing illegal drugs which was to be sent to New Zealand. Virendra Singh, Security Investigation Officer of the courier company in Udyog Vihar area, grew suspicious about the parcel during routine scanning formalities, police said.

Two children and a couple died due to suffocation after a massive fire ripped through a residential building in the Shastri Nagar area of Shahdara in the early hours on Thursday, police said, as reported by news agency PTI. The victims have been identified as Manoj (30), his wife Suman (25), and their two nieces aged 10 and seven years. Eleven others suffered burns.
"We got information from the hospital that four people -- two children and a couple -- died due to suffocation and burn injuries. As per preliminary on-spot observation by the FSL team, spark in the electric wire could be the reason for the fire. Further investigation is on," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara) Surendra Choudhary said, as quoted by PTI.

Delhi Police To Regulate Traffic Near JLN Stadium On Thursday
Delhi Police has issued an advisory stating that traffic will be regulated near JLN stadium on Thursday in view of an event, officials on Wednesday said. According to the police, an event will be held at the JLN stadium on Thursday. A huge gathering of around 60,000 people from all parts of Delhi is expected to attend the function.
The movement of general traffic will be regulated on Bhishma Pitamah Marg, Lala Lajpat Rai Marg, Lodhi Road, Mathura Road, Jor Bagh Road, Dayal Singh/CGO Road, Max Muller Marg, Aurobindo Marg, Barapullah Elevated Road (Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Setu), Dr Jakir Hussain Marg, Lala Lajpat Rai Marg/Lodhi Road Crossing and Lodhi Road Flyover etc. from 12 pm to 10 pm on Thursday, the advisory said.
Kovind Panel May Submit Report On Simultaneous Polls On Thursday
The high-level committee on simultaneous polls headed by former president Ram Nath Kovind is likely to submit its report on 'one nation, one election' on Thursday, it is learnt, as reported by news agency PTI. Though there was no official word yet, sources said the report could be submitted to President Droupadi Murmu.
The panel may recommend amending at last five articles of the Constitution to enable holding of simultaneous polls in the country. The proposed report would also focus on having a singular electoral roll for holding Lok Sabha, state assembly and local body polls.
BJD To Hold Meeting On Thursday As Possibility Of Alliance With BJP Lingers
With the possibility of a pre-poll alliance between the BJP and the BJD still lingering, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has convened a meeting of his party's senior leaders on Thursday afternoon, news agency PTI reported, citing party sources.
The BJD, which had on March 6, a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Odisha, held a meeting of its senior party leaders, decided to go for another round of discussions on the matter as no news was coming from the BJP side, a senior BJD leader privy to the development said on condition of anonymity.
The BJD, in its March 6 meeting, had resolved for "anything" (including alliance) for the larger interest of the state, he said. "The proposal for an alliance had come from the BJP, and the BJD leaders discussed it at Naveen Niwas, Patnaik's residence," he said, as quoted by PTI.
