Congress's G-23 Leaders To Meet On Wednesday To Take Stock Of Election Debacle

Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday sought the resignation of Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) Presidents of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Goa and Manipur.

New Delhi: After the crushing defeat of the Congress in five states, once again Group 23 (G-23) of the disgruntled leaders of the party will meet on Wednesday to discuss the loss in the assembly elections and the CWC's endorsement of Sonia Gandhi's continuance as president, as reported by news agency PTI.

Apart from this group, a meeting of Congress leaders will be held tomorrow, in which other leaders of the party will participate. Group 23 had written a letter to party president Sonia Gandhi in August 2020, stressing the need for reforms and changes in the organisation. Those who wrote these letters included the party's senior leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad, Anand Sharma, Kapil Sibal.

Meanwhile, Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday sought the resignation of Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) Presidents of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Goa and Manipur.

According to Congress senior leader Randeep Surjewala, Sonia Gandhi asked for the resignation of PCC Presidents of the states, which went to polls between February and March this year, to facilitate the reorganisation of the Pradesh Congress Committee.

"Congress President, Smt. Sonia Gandhi has asked the PCC Presidents of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Goa and Manipur to put in their resignations in order to facilitate reorganisation of PCCs," chief spokesperson of the party Randeep Surjewala said on Twitter.

The G-23 has, however, got weakened over the long run with senior leader M Veerappa Moily distancing himself from the group, Jitin Prasada joining the BJP, and Mukul Wasnik not attending its meetings in recent times.
