The 15-year-old elephant wandered around with severe mouth injuries and died standing in the Velliyar River a week later on May 27, after it ate a fruit containing firecrackers in Kerala's Silent Valley Forest.

The incident which sparked outrage over human cruelty forced the Kerala government to launch an investigation and a man allegedly involved in making explosives has been arrested.

In this case, a plea has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking investigation by the CBI or a special investigation team (SIT).
