New Delhi: Every year September 22 is commemorated as the day to honor cancer patients and the people who care for them. This day is observed to give cancer survivors hope that they may keep their defences up like warriors against the fatal disease. The day is observed not just to boost their spirits, but also to recognise their valiant efforts to beat cancer.

World Rose Day: A brief history

This day is specially commemorated in memory of Melinda Rose, a 12-year-old Canadian cancer victim, who had spent the remaining six months of her life spreading joy and hope to the cancer sufferers around her before leaving for the heavenly abode on September 15, 1996.

She was diagnosed with Askin's tumour, a rare kind of blood cancer. Despite this, Melinda's spirit was unaffected by her unusual cancer. The small girl handled her illness admirably and went on to inspire millions.

After an analysis, the physicians had given up hope and predicted that she would only be able to breathe for a few weeks. However, her upbeat personality and unwavering determination to live extended those few weeks to six months. Despite enduring high-intensity chemotherapy, she insisted on attending school, ignoring the inconveniences and agony. Unfortunately, due to a number of difficulties, she was forced to return to the hospital.

Throughout her stay at the treatment center, she shared joy and cheered other patients and medical personnel through poems, letters, and phone calls. Her untimely demise left behind a legacy that is celebrated today as World Rose Day.
