World Book and Copyright Day: Celebrated every year on April 23, this day is also known as World Book Day and is observed in over 100 countries worldwide. Recognised by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), this day aims to create a love for reading, encourage writing and translations, highlight the significance of publishing, and underscore the importance of copyright protection.
The concept was first proposed by Valencian writer Vicente Clavel Andres to honour the legendary author, Miguel de Cervantes (famous for Don Quixote), on his birthday, October 7th, and then on his death anniversary, April 23rd.
Following this, UNESCO decided to designate April 23rd as World Book and Copyright Day, as it coincides with the death anniversaries of notable authors like William Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega as well.
However, there's an intriguing historical twist to this fact. Shakespeare and Cervantes both passed away on April 23rd, 1616, but not on the same day. In those days, Spain followed the Gregorian calendar, while England followed the Julian calendar. So, according to the Gregorian calendar, Shakespeare's death occurred ten days after Cervantes', on May 3rd.
