New Delhi: The nation is celebrating the birth anniversary of India's first deputy Prime Minister and home minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. The day is also observed as the 'National Unity Day." Born on October 31, 1875, in Nadiad District Kheda, Patel is popularly known as the iron man of India and was brought up in the countryside of Gujarat.

As one of the most prominent voices in the freedom struggle, Patel supported non-violent civil disobedience against the British Raj and then the Quit India movement. Vallabhbhai Patel has been dubbed 'Sardar' (chief) for his astounding leadership skills in leading the country through the struggle for independence and beyond, and most notably during the integration of the princely states and the India-Pakistan War of 1947.
