World Mental Health Day 2023: Know How Emotional Well Being Is Connected To Physical Health

Individuals experiencing positive emotions like happiness, contentment, and reduced stress, exhibit improved immune system function, decreased inflammation, and better heart health.

The connection between emotional wellbeing and physical health is undeniable. According to Dr. Vikram Vora, "Scientific research across the world has demonstrated that individuals experiencing positive emotions like happiness, contentment, and reduced stress, exhibit improved immune system function, decreased inflammation, and better heart health. On the other hand, chronic stress, anxiety, or depression can result in a weakened immune system, worsening of chronic diseases and increased susceptibility to infections. A holistic approach to health that includes emotional wellbeing as an integral aspect is therefore necessary to facilitate better health outcomes."

In this regard, Dr. Lalitha Palle, who is the Founder of ForMen Health said, "In this symbiotic relationship, cultivating emotional well-being creates satisfaction, motivation, and an active lifestyle, strengthening our physical health. How Physical Fitness Is Connected To Mental Health:

Dr. Chandni Tugnait who is an M.D. (Alternative Medicines), Psychotherapist, Life Coach, Business Coach, NLP Expert, Healer, Founder &amp and  Director - Gateway of Healing said, "The significance of physical fitness is widely recognized in today's fast-paced world. Regular exercise is essential for maintaining excellent mental health in addition to its positive effects on our physical health. The relationship between physical fitness and mental health is strong.

She also shared tips on how emotional well being can help to lead a healthy life: 

  • Stress reduction - Whether a brisk stroll, a yoga class, or a tennis match, exercise helps lower stress levels. Endorphins, sometimes known as "feel-good" hormones, are released as a result of exercise, and they have been shown to reduce stress and elevate mood.
  • Relaxation - Relaxation is aided by practices like deep breathing when doing yoga or taking a soothing swim. These techniques can lower stress hormone production and increase relaxation and tranquility.
  • Release of endorphins-Endorphins naturally improve mood and are released when people engage in regular physical activity. These brain chemicals have the power to induce sensations of joy and euphoria, successfully counteracting sadness and anxiety symptoms.
  • Greater self-esteem - Whether the goal is to run a specific distance or lift a specific amount of weight, achieving fitness goals can improve self-worth and self-esteem. These successes give one a feeling of pride and accomplishment.
  • Control of sleep cycles - Exercise encourages deeper, more peaceful sleep, which helps regulate sleep cycles, improve mental health, and bring more alertness during the day.
  • Decrease in insomnia - People who regularly exercise frequently have fewer symptoms of insomnia. The relaxing effects of physical movement can help you sleep more peacefully at night.

Additionally, she also went to share some stress management techniques:

  • Strength under stress - Our capacity to handle stress can be improved with regular exercise. It gives us better tools to control and lessen the effects of pressures in our daily lives.
  • Emotional balance – Physical fitness can help us regulate our emotions, reducing the likelihood of mood changes and emotional disturbances. It gives emotional energy a reliable and uplifting release.
  • Neighborhood and friendship - Participating in team sports or group fitness programs encourages social interaction and the formation of new friendships. Social support is essential for preserving healthy mental health.
  • Network of support - Being a part of a fitness community can provide you access to a powerful support system. Being around others with similar objectives and life experiences can motivate and inspire.

The Mind Body Connection:

Dr. Saloni Gupta, who is a Consultant Psychologist, Mental Health & Behavioural Sciences - MIND, at Max Super Specialty Hospital, Dehradun said, "Emotional well-being and physical health are two pillars of our overall wellness, and they are intimately connected in ways that science has increasingly revealed. The profound interplay between these dimensions of health underscores the importance of nurturing our emotional state for the sake of our physical well-being."

She then went on to say the following:

  • Stress and the Immune System: Chronic stress can weaken the immune system, making us more susceptible to illnesses. High levels of stress hormones, such as cortisol, can suppress the immune response, leaving the body less capable of defending against infections. 
  • Inflammation: Emotional distress can trigger inflammation in the body. Prolonged inflammation is associated with various chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes, and arthritis. Managing stress and negative emotions can help reduce inflammation. 
  • Mental Health and Lifestyle Choices: Emotional well-being can influence our lifestyle choices. People experiencing depression or anxiety may be less inclined to engage in physical activity, maintain a balanced diet, or get adequate sleep, all of which are critical for physical health. 
  • Pain Perception: Emotions can impact how we perceive pain. Anxiety and stress can amplify pain sensations, making it more challenging to manage chronic pain conditions. Positive emotions, on the other hand, can have pain-relieving effects. 

Additionally, she also listed out the impact of positive emotions and physical health 

  • Improved Cardiovascular Health: Studies have shown that positive emotions like happiness and gratitude are associated with better cardiovascular health. They can lead to lower blood pressure, reduced risk of heart disease, and enhanced heart rate variability. 
  • Longevity: People with a more optimistic outlook tend to live longer. A positive emotional state can promote healthier behaviours and contribute to a longer life span. 
  • Enhanced Resilience: Emotionally resilient individuals cope better with physical health challenges. They are more likely to adhere to treatment plans, maintain healthier habits, and recover more effectively from illnesses. 

Lastly, Dr. Sunil Kumar Dwivedi, who is an MD Gold Medalist, and a homeopathy expert said, "The gentlest remedies, compassion and understanding can heal the deepest wounds of the mind. On this World Mental Health Day, let us remember that our emotional well-being deserves the same care and attention as our physical health, for the two are intertwined in the delicate dance of our existence."
