New Delhi: In the Bhadrapada month of Shukla Paksha Tritiya, Hartalika Teej Vrat is observed. Sand-based temporary idols of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati are erected on this day, and they are worshipped for procreation and marital happiness.

The Hartalika Teej vrat is meaningful to married women. In order to keep their spouses safe, married women even unmarried females practice the Hartalika Teej vrat to get a suitable groom. According to Hindu Mythology, Mother Parvati fasted Hartalika to obtain Mahadev (Lord Shiva), due to this it is believed the husband's benefits are re-secured by observing the fast.

This name for Hartalika Teej derives from the legend around it. The word Hartalika is a mixture of the words Harat and Aalika, which respectively imply female companion and abduction. According to Hartalika Teej's story, Goddess Parvati's friend guided her into a thicket of trees so that her father could not compel her to marry Lord Vishnu.
