New Delhi: Hartalika Teej is known by this name due to the legend associated with it. Hartalika word is a combination of Harat and Aalika which means abduction and female friend respectively. According to the mythology of Hartalika Teej, Goddess Parvati's friend led her into a dense forest so that her father could not forcefully wed her to Lord Vishnu.


Hartalika Teej 2022 – Date & Time


Hartalika Teej Vrat is observed during Shukla Paksha Tritiya of Bhadrapada month. On this day, makeshift statues of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati are made with sand and worshipped for marital bliss and progeny.


For married women, the Hartalika Teej vrat is seen as significant. Married women (even unmarried girls) observe the Hartalika Teej vrat in order to keep their husbands safe (unmarried girls to get a suitable groom). According to legend, Mother Parvati fasted Hartalika in order to get Mahadev (Lord Shiva). It is said that due to the effect of this fast, the husband gets the boon of long life and happy life.

It is recommended to perform Hartalika Puja in the morning. If performing Shiva-Parvati Puja in the morning is not possible for some reason, Pradosh time is also recommended. Teej Puja should be performed after having an early bath and dressing elegantly. During the Puja, the narrative of Hartalika should be told and worshiped, of the puja should be performed by making idols of (of the sand-made) Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.


Hartalika Teej 2022 – Puja Vidhi


It is advised to use sand or black soil to create the idols of Lord Shiva, Mother Parvati, and Lord Ganesha for Hartalika Puja. Find a place for the idols and decorate the place of worship with flowers and banana leaves. After that, worship Lord Shiva, Mata Parvati, and Lord Ganesha.


The fundamental tradition of this fast is to keep all of the Suhaag (Shringaar) things and offer them to Goddess Parvati. Dhoti and angocha are offered to Shiva in this vrat. It should be donated later. In this manner, listen to the story of Hartalika Teej. In the morning after the aarti and offering vermilion to Goddess Parvati, one can break the fast with seasonal fruits and sweets.


Hartalika Teej 2022 – Puja Samagri 


Although the puja samagri can range to numerous items, hence, here are some of the basic items that are to be needed for Hartalika puja. 



  • Idols of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati

  • Ghee, lamp, incense sticks 

  • Pan 2 or 5, Cotton stick, Camphor

  • 2 pieces of betel nut

  • Banana fruit, a vase with water, mango and betel leaves, 

  • Banana leaf, Bael leaves, Datura fruit, and flower, 

  • Whole Coconut-4, Shami Leaves

  • Sandalwood, Janeu, Fruit, A piece of new cloth


Shingaar Samagri: A tray to keep all the items together, Kajal, Kumkum, Mehndi, Bindi, Sindoor, Bangles, toe ring (bichiya), Combs, Clothing and other articles, Jewelry, a clean cloth, yellow/orange/red, to cover the post.
