This week will culminate into the most-awaited for people in love, Valentine’s Day. In the season of Cupid, lovers go out of the way to make their partners feel special. There is a strong association of chocolate and love, hence the Valentine’s Day will be incomplete with the chocolate day celebration.  Although it took centuries for the two essentials elements chocolate as a popular food, and the celebration of Valentine’s Day to merge.

What’s the history?

The origin of chocolate is rooted in Mesoamerican history and remained a highly-prized luxury item among Mayan and Aztec upper class elites. They used to enjoy the delectable drink that combined roasted cacao beans with cornmeal, vanilla, honey and chilies. In those times cacao beans were seen as valuable a commodity as gold, and infact used to pay taxes levied by Aztec rulers.

Couples in love exchanged elaborate gifts and chocolates always remained an integral part of their expression.  As per the website smithsonianmag.com, later in the history, Richard Cadbury of the chocolate manufacturing giant Cadbury made it more popular. As per the smithsonianmag.com, "Richard Cadbury was looking for a way to use the pure cocoa butter that was extracted from the process Cadbury had invented to make a more palatable drinking chocolate.” It s belived that the solution was 'eating chocolates,' which the legendary chocolate maker packaged in lovely boxes he designed himself. “A marketing genius, Cadbury began putting the Cupids and rosebuds on heart-shaped boxes in 1861...".

It is when lovers started using the pretty chocolate "boxes to save such mementos as love letters." Even today lovers exchange chocolates, flowers, gifts and sweet treats with their loved ones in the run up to Valentine’s Day.
