Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday spoke to the new United States President Joe Biden to discuss regional issues and "shared priorities" and express commitment to a "rule-based international order". Taking to his official Twitter account, the Prime Minister highlighted the matters the duo discussed in their first phone conversation since the American leader assumed office.
"Spoke to @POTUS @JoeBiden and conveyed my best wishes for his success. We discussed regional issues and our shared priorities. We also agreed to further our co-operation against climate change,” PM Modi tweeted.
"President @JoeBiden and I are committed to a rules-based international order. We look forward to consolidating our strategic partnership to further peace and security in the Indo-Pacific region and beyond," he added.

After the telephonic conversation, the White House in a statement said "President Biden spoke to PM Modi, committing that US and India will work closely together to win fight against COVID-19 pandemic, renew their partnership on climate change, rebuild the global economy in a way that benefits the people of both countries."
"US President underscored his desire to defend democratic institutions & norms around the world & noted the shared commitment to democratic values is bedrock of US-India relationship & resolved that rule of law & democratic process must be upheld in Burma," statement read.

The phone call between the two leaders was part of the formal contacts between the Joe Biden administration and the Modi government. The first high-level engagement between the Indian leadership and the new US administration took place two weeks ago, when US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin spoke to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to discuss regional and global issues including developments in the Indo-Pacific.
