Guru Ravidas Jayanti 2021 is marked on February 27 across the country. On this day, people are observing 644th birth anniversary of the popular saint Guru Ravidas, who has contributed hugely to the Bhakti movement.


What is historical significance?


Born in the 14th century, Guru Ravidas belonged to a poor family from Seer Goverdhanpur, Uttar Pradesh. As a social reformer Ravidas vehemently opposed the Indian caste system and was among the first group of people to voice his opinion through poems and teachings based on spirituality. Guru Ravidas is also known as Raidas, Rohidas and Ruhidas and his devotional songs and verses left a lasting impact upon the Bhakti Movement. The Jayanti is widely observed in the northern regions including Chandigarh, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and Punjab.


Guru Ravidas Jayanti 2021: The poet has contributed almost 40 poems in the Adi Granth, the sacred scripture of Sikhism. Also, it is believed that the poet has met Guru Nanak, the first Guru, and founder of the Sikh religion. The spiritual cerses are also included in teh holy scripture of Guru Granth Sahib.


The birthplace of Guru Ravidas also known as Shri Guru Ravidas Janam Asthan is considered as a pilgrimage centre for his devotees. Followers of the great poet celebrate the day by reading  'Amritbani Guru Ravidas Ji' . Devotees also take a dip in the holy river on this day and perform special aarti to mark the birth anniversary.
