Story Behind Dhanteras

1. The story of King Hima's son:

According to mythology, King Hima's son, who was 16 years old, was meant to pass away on his fourth wedding anniversary. And a snake's bite would cause his death.

But his smart and diligent wife made sure she stayed up all night. She gathered all the decorations, maintained a pile of them at the entrance, and lit diyas all over the place.

The light from the diyas and other decorations rendered the God of Death, Yamraj, who had come in the form of a snake, blind, preventing him from entering the king's home. The girl continued to sing pleasant tunes all night long. The tunes were so captivating that the snake lingered at the doorway listening to them. King Hima was rescued in this manner.

2. The story of Dhanvantri:

Hindu texts have a story of Lord Dhanvantri appearing as a result of the ocean's final churning in search of the nectar of immortality (Amrit). Even now, Dhanteras is used to honour his arrival day.

Devotees are said to be cured of all ailments if they recall Lord Dhanvantari.

Even today, during Dhanteras, diyas are placed all over the house as a sign of respect for Lord Yamraj.
