Large feet can result in discomfort and agony, particularly for individuals who participate in physical endeavors. Regardless of whether the cause is hereditary or stems from an underlying medical condition, the management of foot pain is crucial for preserving one's overall well-being and enhancing the quality of life. In an interaction with ABP Live, Dr. Akshat Mittal, Orthopaedic, Doon Medical School and Health Consultant at Yoho delved into various techniques and approaches for managing foot pain related to large feet.

Understanding Foot Pain:

  • Foot pain can stem from a variety of causes, including overuse, injury, and underlying medical conditions.
  • Common foot conditions associated with big feet include plantar fasciitis, flat feet, and bunions.
  • Understanding the cause of your foot pain is essential for effectively managing it.
  • Heel spurs are another source of foot pain. These are abnormal growths of bone on the bottom of your heel. You can get them from wearing the wrong shoes or from an abnormal walk or posture, or even from activities like running. 
  • A stone bruise is a deep bruise of the fat pad of the heel or ball of the foot. It’s often from an impact injury, but it can also happen after stepping on a hard object.
  • Neuropathy, or nerve damage in the feet, is most often caused by diabetes. The pain can be burning, stinging, or feel like electricity. It can happen anywhere in the feet. 
  • Osteoarthritis is when the cushioning cartilage in your joints wears out. Most often, the cause is aging. But osteoarthritis also can happen from an injury or if you have flat feet or very high arches. 

How To Manage These Aches And Pains:

Proper Footwear:

  • Wearing proper footwear is crucial for reducing foot pain and preventing further injury.

  • Topical pain relief creams and gels can also be effective for foot pain management.
  • It is essential to follow the recommended dosage and consult with a doctor before taking any pain relievers, especially if you have a medical condition.

  • Apply ice to the affected area for 15-20 minutes at a time, several times a day.
  • Wrap the ice in a towel or cloth to avoid direct contact with the skin and causing further injury.

Massage And Reflexology:

  • Massage and reflexology can help relieve foot pain by reducing tension and improving circulation.
  • Massaging the feet, especially the arch, and heel, can help alleviate pain and improve flexibility.
  • Reflexology involves applying pressure to specific points on the feet that correspond to other parts of the body.
  • Consult with a licensed massage therapist or reflexologist to ensure proper technique and avoid further injury.

Managing foot pain associated with larger feet requires a multifaceted approach, including proper footwear and the techniques mentioned above. Understanding the cause of your foot pain and seeking treatment from a medical professional can help ensure effective management and improved quality of life.
