Bhasma Holi was celebrated on March 15 this year in a grand manner. On the second day of Rangbhari Ekadashi, people who play this Holi gather at the Mahasmashan Manikarnika Ghat. Here people play Holi with bhasma (ashes) of the pyres.
It is believed that Baba Vishwanath (Lord Shiva) comes to Manikarnika Ghat in the afternoon for taking a bath. Over the years, this tradition has been going here with full enthusiasm and excitement.
Why Holi is celebrated with the ashes of the pyre?
In the Vedas and scriptures, it is believed that Baba Vishwanath (Lord Shiva) keeps ghosts, demons, vampires, visible, invisible, powers which Baba from going among human beings. But because of his kind nature, he comes to Ganga ghat to play Holi with supernatural beings and his followers.
This traditional Holi of Kashi is celebrated at Manikarnika Ghat with pyre ashes amidst burning pyres. People from all over the world come to see this festival and become a part of it. Here aarti is performed in the afternoon of Baba Mahashmashnath and Mata Mashan Kali and the pyre bhasma and gulal are offered to Baba-Mata.
