Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan moved a resolution against Centre's plan to implement Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in State Assembly on Tuesday. After the resolution was moved, the Congress-led UDF welcomed the move but suggested several amendments and modifications.
According to ANI, "Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan moves the resolution in State Assembly on Uniform Civil Code (UCC). Opposition is suggesting some amendments. CM will speak on it."
Pinarayi Vijayan said, Kerala Assembly was concerned and dismayed at the Centre's move to implement a uniform civil code in the country, as reported PTI.
The CM also termed the action as "unilateral and hasty".
The CPI(M)-led government decided to pass the resolution amid the ongoing campaign against UCC by both the ruling Left and Opposition UDF in the state.
The LDF and UDF recently held separate seminars in Kozhikode against the UCC, with members from numerous religious organisations in attendance.
The Law Commission of India had last month received submissions from the public regarding suggestions for implementing the UCC in the country.
Previously, Vijayan condemned the Centre for its plans to introduce the Uniform Civil Code. He claimed that UCC was a BJP ploy to pursue a majoritarian agenda in the state. Vijayan also urged the ruling to reverse the move.
Vijayan said the emphasis should be on modernising and correcting discriminatory practises in the country's personal laws. Instead of forcing UGC. Vijayan stated that the decision on UCC should be taken after discussion with all parties involved and cannot be handled through a fast executive decision.
