Forest department officials registered a case against an unidentified locomotive pilot two days after a female elephant sustained injuries in a suspected train accident near a forested area in Palakkad. As the elephant was unable to stand due to suspected hind leg injuries, forest officials provided medical assistance and sustenance.
Yet, officials said that the elephant's prognosis was not good.
David Abraham, the Forest Veterinary Officer from Thrissur Division, informed the media that the elephant has remained prone since Thursday morning, and despite all attempts, they have been unsuccessful in helping it stand up.
"There are no external injuries but it seems like there are internal injuries. The elephant reached this spot after the suspected accident on Wednesday but since yesterday morning it is lying down and unable to stand up. As of now the prognosis is not good," Abraham said, as per the report on PTI.
He added that all essential resources from the nearby elephant rehabilitation center have been mobilized to the site, and veterinary specialists have conducted a thorough examination of the animal.
The elephant is currently lying down in a forested area near Kottekkad Railway Station in Palakkad district.
The Forest department stated that veterinary experts have been administering medication and providing sustenance to the injured elephant, which has been responding weakly.
According to PTI, Walayar Forest Range Officer said a case has been registered regarding the incident, suspecting that a train might have hit the wild elephant in the Walayar Forest Range.
"We are investigating. We received information about an injured elephant on Wednesday morning. We have inspected the locality and found certain evidence which may indicate it was hit by a passing train. A case has been registered against the loco pilot," the Forest officer said, as per the report.
