Karnataka: Man Gives Triple Talaq To Wife Over WhatsApp, Case Lodged
A woman from Karnataka's Dakshina Kannada district filed a complaint against her husband who allegedly divorced her over WhatsApp.
A woman from Karnataka’s Dakshina Kannada district filed a complaint at the Sullia police station against her husband as per which he allegedly divorced over WhatsApp. A police official while talking to the news agency PTI said that the woman's husband is employed overseas and he has two daughters with the complainant. The accused, Abdul Rasheed is from Thrissur in Kerala and his woman hails from Jayanagar in Sullia taluk in Dakshin Kannada. He married her seven years ago, reported PTI.
The accused took his wife abroad for around two years, however, later he left her in Sullia when she was about to give birth to her second child. Police officials told PTI that the couple had some disagreements of late but the issue was settled with the intervention of elders. Now, the man has sought a divorce from her through triple talaq via WhatsApp.
Sullia police are now investigating the matter, PTI reported.
Earlier in July, a man was booked in Indore for allegedly divorcing her 63-year-old second wife by saying Talaq three times on WhatsApp. As per the police station in charge of the Sadar Bazaar area, Manju Yadav, the accused was booked under the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act 2019, reported the Times of India.
Yadav said, “The accused married the woman, now 63, in 2003 and used to beat her up. She had started living away from him. In 2022, the woman registered a case of violence against her husband at the police station for domestic violence.”
The accused was angry at his wife once he got to know that she had filed a complaint regarding getting triple talaq via WhatsApp. A probe was launched into the matter, the Times of India reported.
The Supreme Court of India in 2017 ruled that the practice of triple talaq is unconstitutional, however, in some areas in the country, it is still being practised.
