SC rejects Center's plea to extend date for NRC publication in Assam

Assam [India], Feb. 20 (ANI) : In a recent update regarding the National Register of Citizens(NRC) in Assam, the Apex Court today has rejected the Centre's plea to extend the date for the publication of the report.

Supreme Court has refused to accept the plea filed by the Central government demanding to extend the date of publication of the final draft of NRC report till July 31.

The government expected that with the updation of the report, it shall be easier to detect the illegal Bangladeshi migrants in Assam who had infiltrated post-March 25, 1971 as per the Assam Accord, 1985.

The first draft of the report was published on December 31, 2017, which apparently missed on the names of certain people who had qualified for the state citizenship of Assam as per their birth certificates and thus the court ordered for a second draft of the report.

The National Register of Citizens report is a crucial undertaking by the Government of Assam to ensure the rights of the citizens. (ANI)
