Light showers to continue in Maharashtra: India Meteorological Department

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], August 30 (ANI): As the operations at Mumbai resume to normalcy, a day after heavy showers in Maharashtra, the Deputy Director General (DDG) India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that the rain has reduced in the past 8 to 10 hours and the situation is likely to be the same for a few hours more.

Talking to ANI, DDG IMD K.S. Hosalikar said, "There is a moisture incursion in the atmosphere and hence, there are chances of rainfall picking up late in the afternoon," adding that the light and moderate showers are going to go on till then.

"We had given warnings about the heavy rainfall and will update them again," Hosalikar said.

Earlier in the day, the local train services between Kalyan to CSMT had resumed, but with a slow speed, the Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of the Central Railways confirmed.

Mumbai on Tuesday recorded 297.6 mm rain in nine hours (8:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.), higher than any 24-hour rain in August in a decade.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had earlier said that due to the IMD warnings, people in Mumbai and areas around the city are advised to stay home unless there is an emergency.

Fadnavis also instructed suspension of toll collection at all Mumbai entry points and sea link till situation is back to normal.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra Education Minister Vinod Tawde has said that all educational institutions in Mumbai will remain closed on Wednesday.

The rains have come when the city is celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi. Ganesh pandals have come forward to help out people stranded in the rains. And, Gurudwaras have also come forward to serve langar (food) to needy people. (ANI)
