89 nominations filed for party president post: Congress CEC

New Delhi [India], Dec 4 (ANI): The Congress Central Election Authority on Monday said 89 nominations for the party president were received by the committee, on Monday.

"89 nominations have been received by us. Nomination papers from all the states have been submitted before us. Prominent Congress leaders have filed nominations today before us," Congress leader Mullapally Ramchandran said, while addressing the media.

The committee also explained: "If there are nominations other than that of Rahul Gandhi, an election will be conducted. Otherwise, the party vice president will be elevated to the post of the president, which is presently held by his mother Sonia Gandhi."

The Congress Central Election Authority was briefed by Chairman Mullapally Ramchandran and members - Madhusudan Mistry and Bhubaneswar Kalita - at the All India Congress Committee (AICC) headquarters.

Earlier in the day, Rahul filed his nomination papers for the post of the party chief at the All India Congress Committee (AICC) headquarters here.

The election, if necessary, will be held on December 16.

If elected, Rahul will succeed his mother Sonia, who has been holding the post for nearly two decades. (ANI)
