Opinion | Govt Push For Self-Reliance In Defence Laudable. But Is India Compromising On Combat-Readiness?

India has made significant strides in developing a robust missile arsenal, achieving a level of self-reliance. But it still lags behind adversaries in air combat & ground warfare capabilities. 

In his Independence Day speech this year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reiterated the government’s commitment to achieving ‘atmanirbharta’ or self-reliance in defence, highlighting the aim to reduce the country’s dependence on imported arms and ammunition. This is a laudable objective, and the various initiatives and policy frameworks implemented by the government in recent years have led to the armed forces increasingly procuring equipment from domestic manufacturers,
