Mumbai: Maharashtra, which was among the states’ worst affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, for the second day running on Monday witnessed a significant drop in the coronavirus cases and fatalities.


The fatalities also went down to 549 compared with 572 deaths on Sunday, taking the toll to 76,398.


The number of new infections remained below the 50,000 level, going down from 48,401 on Sunday to 37,236 now, taking the total tally to 51,38,973, IANS reported health officials as saying.


The situation particularly in the state capital Mumbai seemed to be improving as infections remained below the 5,000 level, at 1,782, as the total tally rose to 677,412. Mumbai reported 74 fresh deaths due to Covid, taking the overall fatalities to 13,855.

The death rate remained stable at 1.49 per cent while the number of active cases fell below the six lakh mark for the ninth day in the state.


Meanwhile, the recovery rate increased from 86.04 per cent to 86.97 per cent with around 61,607 people recuperating from the virus. So far, around 44,69,425 have recovered.


Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Raigad districts recorded 4,883 new coronavirus cases, taking the tally to 14,51,787.
