Jaipur: With cases of mucormycosis or black fungus increasing at a rapid pace in several states amid the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Rajasthan Government has issued a notification declaring black fungus as an epidemic in the state.
This came as Rajasthan currently has around 100 black fungus patients and the state government has made a separate ward for their treatment at Jaipur’s Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital.

- Caused by a group of moulds known as murcomycetes present naturally in the environment, black fungus spreads through the nose and affects other parts of the body such as the eyes.
- Mucormycosis or black fungus infection isprimarily affecting the people recovering from Covid.
- The fungal infection mainly affecting the people with medical health problems that reduces their ability to fight environmental pathogens.
- Diabetics are said to be more vulnerable to the infection.
- The patients with immunocompromised systems are at higher risk of contracting this infection.
- Those who have undergone a transplant, are on immunosuppressants too are at higher risk of contracting the black fungus.
- The patients, who have been on a ventilator for a long time, are also at higher risk of contracting this infection.
- The people having comorbidities, variconazole therapy will be prone to the fungal infection.
- The misuse of steroids is a major cause behind this infection.
- This disease can affect the face, infecting nose, orbit of eye or brain, which can cause even vision loss. It can also spread to the lung.
