Maharashtra on Sunday recorded 16,620 new coronavirus cases, which is the highest number of new cases reported in a single day in 2021. With the new cases in the state, the number of people infected with the Covid-19 virus has increased to 23,14,413.


As per the Health Department, the death toll now stands at 52,861 as around 50 patients lost the battle to the dreaded virus during the same period.


Over 15,000 new cases were reported in Maharashtra in the last two days as the tally crossed 16,000 on Sunday.


According to the Health Department, 21,34,072 people have recovered so far. The health rate in the state stands at 92.21 percent while the death rate is 2.28 percent.

The Health Department in a statement said: 1,26,231 patients are currently being treated in Maharashtra. On Sunday, 1, 08,381 samples were tested. The new cases which have come to the fore include 1,963 cases in Mumbai, 1,780 in Pune, 752 in Aurangabad, 351 in Nanded, 806 in Pimpri-Chinchwad, 209 in Amravati and 1,979 in Nagpur.


The Covid-19 doses were given to more than 1.29 lakh people at 1,156 centers in Maharashtra on Saturday. A total of 28,19,888 people have been vaccinated till March 13 in the state following the vaccination drive, which began on January 16.

Meanwhile, 810 new cases of coronavirus infection were reported in Gujarat on Sunday, with the number of infected increasing to 2,78,207. The death toll in the state now stands at 4,424 following the death of two more people, said an official.


At the same time, 586 patients have become healthy and 2,69,361 people have so far recovered from the infection. There are 4,422 people undergoing treatment in Gujarat at present.
